Team Brick – The Windmill, Brixton, London – 21/11/09 – Live review

Matt Williams – the bespectacled man behind Team Brick – has often spoken out over the fact that he doesn’t really understand the music that he makes; and by the reaction of some the attendees tonight, the sense of perplexity is palpable. Hunched over a plethora of sound manipulating devices, Williams’ actions rarely culminate in that of their original form. Screaming into the mic, the vocal is twisted, shattered and looped into spectrum of discordant rolling landscapes that he builds upon with a lysergic sheen of free-forming guitar, clarinet and drums. The result: a one-man band that defies convention and defines experimental – albeit inexplicably.
