Better-known for his work with seminal slowcore act Low, Alan Sparhawk spent most of the Nineties pissing against the flowering bed of grunge’s commercial success, and still came out smelling of roses. For the man that flourished under softened slow tempos and minimalist arrangements, side project Retribution Gospel Choir marks a radical and fervent departure. With a rampant and resonating heavy Americana sound hanging high from the rafters, Sparhawk’s vocals are delivered in a harmoniously preaching manner upon ‘Hide It Away’ and ‘Working Hard’. However, it’s the three-piece’s lysergic interludes between tracks that really beguiles the already enamoured crowd.
